Pupils Journey of Discovery
18-02-2009
TVEP, has taken hundreds of secondary school children from across the area on a journey of discovery about what engineers do and how they do it.
In conjunction with the University of Teesside, TVEP staged a series of lectures, featuring a Rough Guide to Engineering presentation by Innovative science communications company, Science Made Simple.
The interactive shows included demonstrations showing how engineers design cars that go hundreds of miles an hour, how structures can be built that are capable of surviving an earthquake, and that food can be cooked by using only mirrors.
Mick Thurlbeck, TVEP Chief Executive, said: “The aim of the lectures was to prove that engineering is a great career choice, offering a wide range of jobs and a wealth of opportunities.
“The practical demonstrations revealed, in a fun but informative way, how engineering impacts on many aspects of people’s lives.
“We hope that the pupils who attended the lectures will have been given an insight into the many interesting career options the engineering sector has to offer and will consider this field as an option when planning their futures.”
Adam Robson, of St Hild’s School, said: “It was pretty exciting. It is the first time I have been to something like this. “
Adele Breeze, from the same school, said: “It was interesting. It was fun.”
The series of hour-long lectures proved popular, attracting 400 students from schools across the Tees Valley.
