The most recent initiative sees Aker Kvaerner commit resources to the new 14 – 19 year old Engineering Diploma, in conjunction with the Tees Valley Engineering Partnership (TVEP) and training organisations NETA and Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB).

Aker Kvaerner has been training technical apprentices to become qualified craftsmen for many years. Our apprentice technician/engineer programme in the Tees Valley was relaunched in 2005, and runs in alliance with other Tees Valley engineering companies. With the help of NETA in Stockton, Aker Kvaerner has trained over 200 apprentices in various disciplines over the past 5 years and is one of the largest trainers of young engineers in the North East.

The apprenticeship framework is made up of four stages; 1 - Work Based Learning (NVQ), 2 - Key Skills, 3 – Employment Responsibilities & Rights, 4 - Further Education (day release at college). A number of Aker Kvaerner’s apprentices have been identified for fast-tracking through to the Higher National Certificate, which will enable them to target a foundation degree and eventually honours degree level on their way to becoming a professionally-qualified engineer.

Aker Kvaerner’s undergraduate programme commenced in 2002, and each year undergraduates join us for a 12-month placement from various engineering disciplines, including Electrical, Instrumentation & Control, Chemical, Mechanical, along with undergraduates from Business, I.T. and Marketing. Our undergraduates come from all over the UK to gain experience of engineering from design through to construction and commissioning and even through to decommissioning, across the range of different industries we work in. To date the programme has been so successful, Aker Kvaerner has sponsored several students through their remaining years at university, before offering them the opportunity to join our graduate development programme.

Aker Kvaerner UK Graduate Development Programme (AKUKGDP) is now accredited by the IMechE, IEE/IET and IChemE, with application for reaccredidation of ICE planned for 2007. The four-year programme has been successful in bringing some of the highest calibre engineering students through to key positions within the company and customers’ sites.
